(1972) - The Clean Water Act (CWA) establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters. The basis of the CWA was enacted in 1948 and was called the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, but the Act was significantly reorganized and expanded in 1972. "Clean Water Act" became the Act's common name with amendments in 1972.

Industry Standards and Certifications

  • American Water Works Association (AWWA) - The American Water Works Association began publishing consensus documents in 1908. Today, there are over 190 AWWA Standards. These standards encompass all aspects of water treatment and supply, including products and processes from source to storage and from treatment to distribution.   • National Sanitation Foundation (NSF ) Standards - NSF/ANSI 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects is an American National Standard that establishes minimum health-effects requirements for the chemical contaminants and impurities that are indirectly imparted to drinking water from products, components and materials used in drinking water systems. This standard does not establish performance, taste and odor, or microbial growth support requirements for drinking water system products, components or materials.
